Archibald Brownlee (1710-1788), son of John Brownlee, Third Laird of Torfoot, emigrated to America in about 1745-1755 and settled in Pennsylvania. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in Scotland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan and Missouri.

Elizabeth Guthrie, daughter of John Guthrie, was born in 1755 in Londonderry, Ireland. Her family emigrated in 1771. She married Joseph Brownlee in 1775 in Pennsylvania. Her husband and son were murdered in 1782 and she and her daughter were held captive. In 1784, after her release, she married William Guthrie (d. 1828).

They immigrated to Montreal from Carluke, Scotland in 1819. They were the parents of eight children. William Pillans (1837-1914) was born in Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland, son of Robert and Janet Pillans. He married Janet Muir in 1860 and they immigrated to New South Wales in 1885. Their daughter, Annie, later married John Marr in 1887. John was born in 1857 at Borrowstouness, Scotland, son of Joseph and Henrietta Drysdale and immigrated to New South Wales in 1883. Descendants lived in Scotland and Australia.
