Volume 1 is largely the autobiography of Dr. Hayle Buchanan (b. 1925) and the biography of his wife Melva Lois Taylor (1928-1998). The book chronicles Dr. Buchanan's educational pursuits and military and missionary service, as well as Melva's missionary service. Volume 2 is the story of Hayle's and Melva's life together and their service to their family and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

John Lorenzo Buchanan's grandfather, John Buchanan, was born in Ramelton, Donegal, Ireland in 1786, and immigrated to the United States in 1800. He married Nancy Ann Bache in 1812 in Lexington, Kentucky. They moved to Lima, Illinois, where he died 1839.
This book is about the descendants and brings the generations forward. It goes hand in hand with "Ancestry of John Lorenzo Buchanan and Julia Ann Zufelt".

Thomas Thompson (d.ca.1795) was a farmer in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He married Ann Finney, daughter of Joseph and Rebeccah Crispin Finney. The Finneys had originated in England and later lived for a time in Barbados. Thomas and Ann were the parents of eight children. In about 1750 they moved to Orange County, North Carolina. Their descendants lived in North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri and other parts of the United States.

William Thompson (abt. 1720-1797) married Jane Buchanan in County Down, Ireland. She died and he married Lydia Graham (1743-1830) and immigrated to Tazewell County, Virginia.
