John Burnside (1778-1860) was born in County Donegal, Ireland to William and Margaret Burnside and came to America at a young age. He settled in West Virginia where he married Elizabeth Collins in 1801 and they were the parents of thirteen children. Descendants live in West Virginia and other parts of the United States.

James Burnside was born in Virginia about 1753. He married Martha Rodgers and they were the parents often children. During the Revolutionary War he and his family remained loyal to the crown of England. Later his family moved further south into Alabama and Mississippi where during the Civil War at least one branch of his descendants were sympathetic to the anti slavery cause while living in the south. Family history and genealogical information about the descendants of Bernardus Van Reenen of Utrecht, Holland who married Pieternellia VanderWerdt sometime prior to 1805 in Holland. They were the parents of four sons who immigrated with their families to the United States in the year 1846. The descendants of Bernardus settled in Pocahontas Co., West Virginia and later moved to Wisconsin, Iowa, Ohio and elsewhere.
