James Burnside (ca. 1770-1883) was born and died in Butler County, Pennsylvania. He married Rebecca Lawhead, daughter of Joseph Laughhead, ca. 1793. They had four children, Jane, Martha, Mary and Joseph (1804-1875) in Butler County and migrated to Hubbard, Ohio where they had four more children, John (b. 1807), Hannah, Nancy and Margaret. Descendants include Buckman, Creger, Kuenzli, Monaghan, Thorp and related lines.

They were the parents of four sons who immigrated with their families to the United States in the year 1846.
