Capt. Matthias Button was born a Westerly, Rhode Island, 22 April 1732, the son of Matthias and Mary Brown Button. He was a farmer and a captain in the Revolutionary War. He married 1) Phoebe Butt in 1753. They had seven children. He married 2) Elizabeth Butt, Phoebe's sister, in 1765. They had seven children. He died at Wells, Vermont, in 1811. Descendants lived in Ohio, New York, Michigan, Dakota, and Massachusetts.

Description
Alphonso Button was born in 1834. He collected material on the Button lines who descended from Matthias Button who was a early settler of Massachusetts. Much of his research was done from his home in Michigan about 1900. Several of these individual Buttons joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their family lines were traced by their descendants. Descendants now live throughout the United States.
