John Manley Snipes (1761-1844) was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. His parents were William Snipes (1735-17871) and Sarah Herndon. He married Sarah Lindsey (1770-1861), daughter of John Lindsey (1738-1794) and Mary Robertson (1741-1817), in about 1786 in Chatham County, North Carolina. They had nine children. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in North Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas.

John Harrod Sr. was of English ancestry and was likely born ca. 1700 in Massachusetts. He had two sons by his first wife before he married Sarah Moore ca. 1734 in Shenandoah Valley, Pennsylvania. Later they moved to Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. John was the father of nine children and died ca. 1760 in Pennsylvania.
