Family history and genealogical information on the Kerley, Cearley or Carley family that immigrated to America from Dorset, England ca. 1638 aboard the ship Confidence and settled in the state of Massachusetts. Early pioneer descendants of this family later moved and settled primarily in Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. Later 19th century and early 20th century descendants moved to Texas and Arkansas.

Samuel Lemming was born in 1806 probably in Ireland. He married Elizabeth Jane Babb and they had eight children. He settled in Michigan after he immigrated to America. Information on several of his descendants is included in this volume. Descendants now live in Ohio, and elsewhere.

Richard Benjamin Carley was born in Indiana in 1816, the son of Richard Bartholomew Carley. He married Jemima L. McKinny in 1840 at Vernon, Indiana. They had seven children, 1841-1854, all born in Indiana. She died in 1876 at Buffalo, Kansas. He married 2) Barbara in 1878 in Wilson County, Kansas. Myrtle McCarley was born in Ohio in 1887. She was the daughter of Robert McCarley and his fourth wife Eveline Ferrell. She married Gilbert Alexander Lemming and they were the parents of seven children. Information on several of her descendants who continue to live in Ohio and elsewhere, as well as her ancestral lines back to John McCarley, her great great grandfather is included in this material.

John Kemper (b.1692), son of John George Kemper and grandson of Johann Kemper, immigrated from Germany to Germanna (?), Virginia and married Alice (Ailsey?) Utterback there about 1716. Lars Knudsen Klungland (1825-1900) emigrated in 1866 from Norway to Polk County, Iowa, and married twice (once to a widow in Norway, in 1867 again in Iowa). Walter Carley was a ship builder in Ireland about 1770. He and his wife had about 9 children. Several of these children brought their families to Canada and some on to the United States before 1850. Tradition has it that they built their own boat and sailed it to Canada. Records for these descendants are included in this volume. Today descendants reside in eastern Canada and many eastern states of the United States.
