Malissa "Lissie" Childress was born in 1853 to Thomas Childress and Mariah Martin in Jacksboro, Tennessee. She married Gilbert Arthur Marcum (1852-1918) in 1873. Malissa died in 1925 in Pruden, Kentucky. Contains her experiences during the Civil War as passed down through her daughter to her grandson, the author. Robert Childers, son of Henry and Susannah (Goolsby), was born in Amherst County, Virginia about 1762. He married Nancy Pryor. Another branch descends from Joseph and Mary Childers, also of Amherst County, Virginia. Joseph died in 1798. Hugh Martin Childress, Sr. (1800-1886) was born in Tennessee, and was a soldier in Texan military forces, fighting for independence from Mexico in 1835/1836. He settled in Coleman Co., Texas. One of his sons, Hugh Martin Childress, Jr. (1835-1897) was one of the Texas cattle kings of the 1870s, and died in New Mexico.
