John Coggeshall, a merchant, his wife Mary, and three children, emigrated from Essex County, England, in 1632, and settled at Boston, Massachusetts. He moved of Rhode Island in 1638 and founded Newport, Rhode Island in 1639. He died in 1647. Record describes a coat of arms on his seal and two other Coggeshall coats of arms.

The name Cogswell is derived from Coggeshall and was given to those who lived around Coggeshall, a monastary in the Diocese of St. Albans. Sir Thomas Coggeshall (ca. 1159) is considered to be the common ancestor to the numerous Cogswells and Coxwells who live in England, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Nicholas Easton (ca. 1593-1675) and his sons, Peter and John, emigrated from England and settled first at Ipswich, Massachusetts, in 1634. They moved to Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1635; to Hampton, New Hampshire, in 1638; to Portsmouth, Rhode Island, in 1639; and to Newport, Rhode Island, in 1641.
