John Colson (ca.1630-1687) was the immigrant ancestor of the Colsons. He was born in Scotland and was one of Virginia's earliest settlers. One of his two sons, Jacob Colson (1668-1728) was the father of five children. His descendants settled in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.

Lars Carlsson (1755-1851) married Maris Samuelsdotter in 1775. They had three sons, 1776-1782. The was a farmed in Kushult, Odeshog, Sweden. Their son, Carl Samuel Larsson (1782-1859), married twice and was the father of twelve children. Ten of his children immigrated to the United States. Descendants listed lived in Illinois, Nebraska, South Dakota, and elsewhere. Descendants use the surnames Carlson and Colson.

Cornelius Cursonwhit was born between 1640 and 1660, and died in or after 1710. He was probably of Dutch descent. He married Hannah Hobbs ca. 1685, and they lived in New Hampshire. They had two children. Spelling of the surname varies; the Dutch diminuitive suffix "whit" was dropped by most descendants, many of whom spell their name Corson or Colson. Descendants lived mostly in New England.

Phylander Chase Orpin (1845-1938) was born in Nova Scotia, Canada and moved at a young age to the United States. He was the son of Thomas Orpin and Charlotte Roach.
