Their children John H., William, Susanah, Daniel, Isaac, James Preston, Enoch, Joseph, May or Mary, Reuben S., and Levi Preston were born in North Carolina, Virginia, and perhaps New Jersey and Tennessee. David Stuart, Sr. (1745-1823) was born in Ireland, perhaps in Ulster. He married Jane Douglas (d. 1811), ca. 1764 in Ireland. They had ten children, ca. 1765-1789. The family immigrated to America, perhaps in 1789. They appear to have lived in Maryland, York County, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, before settling in the area that later became Washington County, Tennessee. Descendants listed lived in Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, and elsewhere.

John Laughlin Mathews Sr. was born 27 March 1828 in Robeson Co., North Carolina. He was the son of Neil Mathews and Margaret Conley. John married Flora Morrison 14 September 1854 in Montgomery Co., Georgia. They were the parents of seven children. John was active in politics all his life and died 15 August 1895 in Montgomery Co., Georgia. Descendants lived primarily in Georgia, Florida, Virginia and elsewhere.
