Barent Jacobsen Cool was born ca. 1610, probably in Amsterdam. He married Marretje Leenderts probably near Amsterdam. They lived for a time in New Amsterdam (New York). Descendants lived in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere. Some descendants changed surname to "Kool" and "Cole".

Benjamin Newton McCool (1854-1911), son of Benjamin Allen McCool (1810-1893) and Jane Tatum (1811-1894), was born in Pickens County, Alabama. He married Nancy Catherine White (1856-1936) in 1878. They had twelve children.

He immigrated to America ca. 1639 and purchased land near what is now known as Brooklyn, New York. Cornelius married Altien Brackhonge. Adam McCool was born ca. 1735. He was living in Anson County, North Carolina, in 1759 in an area that is now in South Carolina. He and his wife, Jane, had seven children. He died in 1801. Descendants listed lived in South Carolina, Indiana, and elsewhere.

Peter Gortner came to America in 1734 from Europe. His homeland and parents are not known. He stayed in Pennsylvania before settling in Virginia. He married Mary and they had at least 4 children. Information on many of his descendants is included in this volume along with other early Gortner individual who settled in colonial America. Descendents now live throughout the United States.
