Athon Courtenay was the son of a chastelain of Castle Renaud. He fortified the town of Courtenay in Gastinois, part of the Isle of France and assumed the name of Courtney. Record traces line of descent through his son, Josceline Courtnay (d. 1065) to Frances Courtney, daughter of Captain George William Augusus Courtenay, a native of Ireland.
