While family tradition states that the Griffin family was of Irish origin, it is probably of Welsh origin as most people surnamed Griffin come from Wales. The earliest known ancestor was Benjamin Griffin born in 1705 (probably in Virginia) and died in Craven County North Carolina in 1777. Joseph Marshall was born ca. 1710-1715 in County Donegal, Ireland. He and his wife, Mary Penden (?), immigrated to America and settled in Sherman's Valley, now New Bloomfield, Perry County, Pennsylvania. They had eight children. He died in Rye township, Pennsylvania, in 1785. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York, Ohio, California and elsewhere.
