The genealogy of Jacob Crooks (1794-1853), who was born in Jefferson Co., Kentucky to Michael Crooks, born in Germany, and his first wife. Jacob Crooks married Hannah Croy (1797-1882) in Muskingum County, Ohio in 1816. She was the daughter of Benjamin Crooks and Christiana Horn. This couple had eight children, all born in Clay County, Indiana. Descendants live in Indiana, Iowa, Tennessee and elsewhere.

James Crooks was born in 1836 in Londonderry, County Derry, Ireland, the son of Mary Bell and Alexander Crooks. He came to America in 1849 settling first in Laurens County, South Carolina, he moved to Chambers County, Alabama in 1857. He married Alvara McCarley, daughter of David McCarley Jr. and Sarah McKee, in 1860.
