Daniel Croom was born in 1683 in Ireland. He was married twice after coming to Virginia and had six children before his death in 1734. His wives included Elizabeth Ballou who died in 1729 and Susannah who survived him. His descendants later lived in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, New Mexico as well as elsewhere.

The earliest known ancestor, Joseph Thompson (ca. 1710-1768), was born in County, Monaghan, Ireland, and died in Spartanburg District, South Carolina. He came with the Dills from Monaghan County, Ireland ca. 1740, and located in York Co., Pennsylvania. In about 1750 family migrated from Pennsylvania to South Carolina.
