Louis Dumas (Demoss) immigrated to America about 1715, and purchased land in Baltimore County, Maryland in 1717. He moved to Orange County, Virginia (now Berkeley County, West Virginia) before 1736, and died there in 1743. Descendants have lived principally in Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Kansas, and surrounding states.

Chiefly a record of the military life of James W. Starnes. He was born 9 Jul 1817 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, as James Wellborn Starnes. He married Mary Christina Rudder 19 Apr 1849. She was born in 1830 and died in 1904. He died 30 Jun 1863. They were the parents of five children, two of which reached adulthood. James was a Colonel in the Confederate Cavalry and reported to Colonel Forrest.
