Richard Ridgway (1648/1650-1723), a Quaker, married Elizabeth Chamberlain, and immigrated in 1679 from England to Bucks County, Pennsylvania. After Elizabeth died, he married Abigail Stockton, and in 1695 moved to Burlington County, New Jersey. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Missouri, Iowa, Oregon, Washington and elsewhere.

He married Martha Nutt (1810-1849) in 1829 in Wantage, Berkshire, England. They had six children. Three of their children - William, Ann and Alfred - immigrated to America.
