Kevin O'Doherty (1823-1905) and his wife, Eva Kelly (1830-1910) were of Irish Catholic heritage. As an Irish nationalist poet, Eva became known as "Eva of the Nation" after the Irish paper,"Nation." Their grandaughter, Nancy Cavanaugh (b. 1836), married James O'Doherty (b. 1828). The grandson of Nancy and James, James Patrick O'Doherty (1893-1948), was born in Woburn, Massachusetts. John Brown was born 25 June 1841 in Waterford, Ireland. He was the son of Michael Brown and Joanna Murphy. John immigrated to the United States prior to 1865 and married Ann Leahy 6 January 1865 in Worcester, Massachusetts. They were the parents of nine children.
