The Garrott/Garrett/Gerard/Giraut families were Wallons, and were driven from France to Germany to Holland. By 1740, John, Isaac, Susanna, James and others of the name were located in Amelia Co., Virginia. Some descendants and relatives migrated into Kentucky and Tennessee but many of them have remained chiefly in the South.

Pierre Faure, a Huguenot refugee from France, arrived in Virginia in 1700 or 1701. His name is spelled variously in records, and he was commonly known as Peter Ford or Fore. He and his wife Elizabeth had six sons, three of whom had issue. Descendants live throughout the United States.

James Roach (ca.1763/1765-1848) moved from Charleston, South Carolina (possibly via North Carolina) to Montgomery County, Virginia, and married Frances Collier (Collyer) in 1793. She died shortly, and James married Fanny Lawrence in the next year or so after 1800. They moved to Knox County and then Monroe County, Tennessee, and then to Greene County, Indiana.
