Ambrose Daniel Gring was born in Pennsylvania in 1849. He came from a family of ministers and about 1890 he and his wife Hattie L. Gring began a missionary journey to Japan. For the next 25 years he spent most of his time in Japan. In 1915 he began a second family that were not old when he died in 1934.
