Geraldine is a term applied to a prominant English-Irish family, related to, or descended from the Gherardini family of Tuscany, Italy. They came to Ireland in 1169 with Strongbow, and were knighted. The text says that in Ireland knighthood was hereditary, and was thus passed on to succeeding generations. Descendants include the Fitzgeralds and the Fitzgibbons, or MacGibbons.
