The Whitman ancestry is traced to Joseph Whitman who was born before 1653 in England and eventually settled on Long island in New York. Descendants live throughout the United States.

Description
Absalom Fobes was serving in the Continental Army as early as 1775. He was killed in the battle of White Plains, New York, in 1778, leaving four minor sons. His son, Libeus Forbes, was born in 1773 or 1774 at Northbridge, Massachusetts. He married Hannah Warren at Grafton, Massachusetts, in 1795. They had two children, 1796-1797. Libeus Forbes (b. 1773) was baptized at Upton, Worcester Co., Mass. He was the son of Absolom Forbes and third greatgrandson of John Forbes, the immigrant ancestor originally of Scotland, who came to this country from Holland in 1628, and settled in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
