John Bishop (1709-1815) was the son of Eleazar Bishop and Sarah Dart, who immigrated from England to Connecticut ca. 1692. John was born in New London, Connecticut. He had four sons, who also were born in New London. They were: Captain William Bishop (1732-1815), Deacon Peter Bishop (1735-1826), Colonel John Bishop Jr. (1736-1815) and Timothy Bishop (1740-1827).
