John Cephus Fortenberry was born October 30, 1859 in Lawrence County, Arkansas. In 1869 his family moved to Denton County, Texas. On March 22, 1883 he married Ann Riley Scates, who was born November 18, 1865 in Knoxville, Tennessee. They moved to Della Plains, Texas in 1890. They had eleven children. Descendants and relatives lived in Texas, New Mexico, California, Washington and elsewhere.

Thomas Futch was born in about 1776 in North Carolina. His parents were probably Onesimus Futch and Ann Dukes. He married Elizabeth Cook, daughter of John Cook and Elizabeth, in about 1800 in Georgia. They had eight children. Thomas died 14 September 1842 in Hinds County, Mississippi.
