Stephen Collins Foster (1826-1864) was the son of William Barclay Foster (1779-1855) and Eliza Clayland Tomlinson (1788-1855). Stephen's great-grandfather, Alexander Foster (1710-1767) was the first of the Foster family to come to America. He was born in northern Ireland and emigrated about 1725 settling in Pennsylvania.

John Foster (1626-1688) was born in England and immigrated at a young age to Massachusetts. He settled in Salem and lived in bother Salem and nearby Beverly during his lifetime. John married Martha Tompkins and they became the parents of at least two children, one of whom was Samuel Foster (b. 1652). Samuel married twice and was the father of at least two children. His many descendants live throughout the United States.
