John Stephens was born ca. 1735 in England. He immigrated to America sometime prior to his marriage to his first wife (Lucretia Gaskill) ca. 1760. Lucretia died in the year 1785 and John married Fanny Brock ca. 1786. John lived his life in New Jersey and was the father of seven children. Descendants lived in New Jersey, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and elsewhere.
