John Jackson (Jack) Berry was born 15 June 1818 in Edgefield, South Carolina, posssibly the son of Wiley H. and Mildred Rountree Berry. John had a twin brother named Peter. In 1847 John, along with other families from Edgefield migrated to Cherokee County, Texas settling in a community they first called Edgefield. In 1854 the name of the community was changed to Sardis.
