The East family appears to have originated in Yorkshire. Since the mid-1800s, most members of the family have been involved with innkeeping and barkeeping. The tradition appears to have started with Thomas and Hannah Ward East when they ran the Grantham Arms Hotel in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire. They were the parents of three daughters, all of whom married and entered into the innkeeping business. Descendants live in England.
