The Chroninger or Groninger family immigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania and from there moved to Ohio. The earliest ancestor included in this book is a Leonard Chroninger born ca. 1830 in Ohio. He later moved to Indiana and Missouri, where his descendants lived in Johnson, Cass, and Jackson counties. Leonard Groninger was born in 1723 in Ruchen, Germany. He arrived in America in 1749. He married Elizabeth Deishman in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania sometime prior to 1753. Leonard died in 1788. Includes histories on some of Leonard's descendants as well as a history on his daughter-in-law's father, George May (d. 1798).

George May (1730-1797) of Mifflin and Juniata Co, Pennsylvania married Katherine DeWalt (1742-d.before 1795) the daughter of Michael DeWalt and Maria Barbara Schmidt. He married (2) Mary Miller, the widow of Theobald Miller of Penn's Twp. Eleven children were born to the first marriage. John Cline (1750/1760-1829) moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania and then to land near Shelbyville, Kentucky, and married twice. Johannes Hench (1711/1712-1801) immigrated from France (via Germany and The Netherlands) to Philadelphia in 1743, settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and married Christina Schneider in 1749. They later moved to Cumberland (now Perry) County, Pennsylvania and then to land in what is now Juniata County, Pennsylvania. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Iowa, California and elsewhere.
