The earliest proven ancestor, Richard Gurney (ca. 1630-1691), was born in England. He was probably the son of John Gurney, who was known to have settled in Weymouth & Braintree, Mass. He lived in Weymouth, where he married Rebecca Taylor, the daughter of John and Rebecca Taylor. Family members and descendants live in Massachusetts, Ohio, Maine, New York and elsewhere.

William Gurney came from Gloucester, England to Illinois in 1845.
