Franklin Melburn Hager was born in 1871 in Michigan, the son of Isaac and Harriett Hager. His family moved when he was young to Kansas and then Missouri. In 1907 he married Mary Nancy Fraley, the daugher of James A. and Sarah Wyatt Fraley. They raised six children. William Ager (Hager) immigrated to America in Governor Winthrop's fleet and died in 1675 in Rhode Island at the battler of Narragansett Bay. The family intermarried with the Gilberts in 1848 and the Ehrets in 1881. Descendants live throughout the United States.

Henry Hager emigrated, with his uncle Johan Frederick Hager, from the Palatinate of Germany to Albany (later Schoharie) County, New York in 1709. Henry served in the French and Indian war and, with his son Jacob, served in the Revolutionary War--he died after 1782.
