Samuel Haines (1611-1686) was born in England and immigrated to America in 1635. He settled in Portsmouth, New Hampshire where he was a deacon of the First Congregational Church. He was the father of three children, one of whom was Samuel Haines (1646-1688) who married Mary Fifield of Hampton, New Hampshire. They were the parents of six children. Descendants live in New Hampshire and other parts of the United States.

Joshua Bracket Haines (1824-1903) was the son of James Haines and Hannah Lord. He married Martha Jane Roberts (1832-1896), daughter of John and Martha Julia Roberts, 1848 in Dover, New Hampshire. She was born at North Berwick, Maine. They were the parents of six children.
