Jacob Hamblin (1819-1886) was born in Ohio and grew up in Wisconsin. In 1842 he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and eventually traveled to Utah where he became prominent in the settlement of southern Utah and was known as an "apostle" to the Lamanites (Native Americans). He was husband of four wives and the father of twenty-four children. Descendants live throughout the western region of the United States.

The author examines a family tradition that Jacob Hablin, great Latter-day Saint missionary to the Indians, had Indian blood through his descent from Augustin Bearse. Augustin Bearse, of Shiplocke, Hampshire, England, emigrated to New England in 1638, at the of 20, and became on the the first settlers of Barnstable, Massachusetts. Tradition says he married an Indian princess. The author concludes that there is not enough evidence to support the tradition.

Wallace Hamblin, son of Oscar Hamblin and Mary Ann Corbridge, was born 27 April 1862 in Santa Clara, Utah. He married Ida Minerva Rollins (1862-1949), daughter of James Henry Rollins and Evaline Walker, in 1881. They had nine children. He died in 1937 in Lyman, Wyoming.

Edwin Marion Whiting (1857-1934) was the grandson of Elisha and Sally Hullett Whiting who migrated from Massachusetts to Ohio about 1815. Some of the family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and migrated to Utah. Edwin Marion Whiting and Anna Maria Isaacson were married in 1877. Descendants have remained chiefly in the West.
