Description
Hardy County was part of Virginia until 1863 when it became part of West Virginia.
The county recorder existed from 1863 to 1872 and handled many of the legal documents that the clerk of the county court managed before and after this. Although the county court had been abolished and replaced with a board of supervisors, in many counties it still dealt with cases in secret.

The Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery was established in 1831 and replaced in 1850 by the Circuit Court.
