The Hasty families are of Scotch descent and many of them left the lowland and border counties of Scotland during the 17th century from Ulster (Northern Ireland) for America and settled in New England and the southern colonies. Daniel Hasty was born probably in Londonderry, Ireland. He and his family immigrated to America in the early eighteeth century. They settled in Portsmouth and Rye, New Hampshire from 1721 to 1732 and later moved to Scarborough, Maine. In 1721 his wife's name was stated to be Mary (no surname listed). Daniel died in 1756 in Scarborough. Traces some descendants through eight generations.

James Martin Hasty was born in 1735 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. He married Nancy Rebecca McPherson in 1781. They had three sons, William McPherson (1784-1820), John Matthew (1789-1822) and James Martin, Jr. He died in 1843 in Richmond County, North Carolina.
