Randolph Slack was born in about 1720 in Pennsylvania. He married Sarah Penn, daughter of John Penn and Mary in about 1743. They had seven children. He died in 1795 in Washington County, Kentucky. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, Indiana and Texas.

Six Ochiltree families immigrated from Scotland or Ireland to the United States. The principal family dealt with in this book is that of Matthew Ochiltree (d. 1798), who immigrated from County Armagh, Ireland to Delaware about 1760. He married Mary Maxwell in 1761.
