There were several families among the early settlers of New England bearing the name Hammond; most of them probably sprang from a common stock in England. The William Hammond family emigrated from England in 1632 to Massachusetts, settling in Watertown.

William Headley immigrated to America, landed at Boston, migrated to Connecticut, then Long Island, and in 1664 joined a group settling Elizabeth Town, Essex County, New Jersey. He and his wife, Sarah, had at least two sons. He died in 1683.
