John Wells Hess was born 24 August 1824 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Jacob Hess and Elizabeth Foutz. He married Emeline Bigler (1824-1862) 2 November 1845 in Nauvoo, Illinois. They went with the Mormon Battalion in 1846 and settled in Utah in 1847. They had ten children. He married Emily Card (1831-1872) in 1852 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had ten children.
