Joel Estes was born 25 May 1806 in Madison County, Kentucky. His parents were Peter Harris Estes (1774-1854) and Esther Hiatt (1781-1852). He married Martha Ann Stollings in 1826 in Clay County, Missouri. They had thirteen children. He died in 1875 in Farmington, New Mexico. He married Anna Ward Carty (1756-1829), daughter of William Ward and Mary Elizabeth Howard (?), 30 May 1782 in New Jersey.
