James Cosgrove was born in about 1790 in Borrisnoe, County Tipperary, Ireland. His father was probably Terrence Cosgrove. He married Mary Devaney (1795-1868). They had seven children. The family emigrated and settled in Morgan County, Illinois. It is believed that James died on the ship coming to America. Descendants and relatives lived in Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Iowa and elsewhere.
