Johann Nicholaus Heinrich Kress was born 12 May 1721 in Steinau on the Road, Heßen-Nassau, Germany. His parents were Johannes Peter Kress, Sr. and Anna Elizabeth Muller. He married Catherine Eberhardt in about 1755 in Pennsylvania. They had twelve children. He died in about 1783 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in North Carolina, Illinois and Missouri.
