Ancestral families and family of Eva Belle Kempton (1878-1908). She was born in Croydon, New Hampshire, the daughter of Frank Warren Kempton (ca. 1851-1890) and Alice M. Bartlett Kempton (1857-1808). She was adopted by George and Louisa Worthen Barnes at the age of six. She married 1) Emery Glidden Ordway (1874-1905) in 1896. They had two children, 1897-1900. Deacon Edmund Rice (ca. 1594-1663) came from Barkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England and settled in Sudbury, Massachusetts in 1638 or 1639. He married Tamazine (d. 1654) and they had twelve children. He married Mercie (Hunt?) Brigham, widow of Thomas Brigham, in 1655 and had five more children. Descendants lived in New England, Iowa, Georgia, New York, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and elsewhere.

John Howe Hoge was born 15 May 1815 in Miami County, Ohio. His parents were Daniel Howe and Nancy Ann Stafford. He married three times but had no children. He died 31 May 1895 in Point Pleasant, Bland County, Virginia. His niece's husband, Wylie Jackson Compton, continued the journal after his death, from May 1895 to January 1896.
