Joseph Barton (b.ca1755) lived in Pendleton District, S.C. He was the father of five children: David (1777-1859), James, Rebecca, Cassey and Pheby. His son David was with his father in Laurens District, S.C. in 1790. Family members later lived in Georgia and Alabama. Several generations of descendants are given.

John Austin was born 6 January 1779 in North Carolina. He married Rachel Denny (1784-1818), daughter of James Denny and Ester Small, 21 June 1802 in Wayne County, Kentucky.
