Description
How qualified or equipped were Irish land agents to deal with the challenges that the mid-19th century, and the famine in particular, brought? Having identified over 100 men who acted as land agents during the period 1830 to 1860, this study examines the role and function of the agency during a time when their skills and qualifications were truly tested.

"Fiants ... were the warrants directed to the Irish Chancery, directing the issue of letters patent under the great seal, and corresponding to the 'Signed Bills' of English procedure ... Letters patent could cover a wide variety of matters: leases and grants of land, either from the Crown itself or following upon a surrender by the original proprietor, in the well-known but often misunderstood process known as 'surrender and regrant;' appointments...

"A unique land survey taken as a way to determine the amount of tax payable by landlords to the Church of Ireland, the Tithe Applotment Books represent a virtual census for pre-famine Ireland. Because the results of this land survey were originally compiled in nearly 2,000 hand-written volumes, this resource is known to genealogists as the Tithe Applotment Books." -- from back of case.

"Desmond Norton's study of the relationships between landlords and tenants in Ireland during the Great Famine period of the 1840s is principally based on a large uncatalogued archive in private ownership of the Stewart & Kincaid land agents. Much of the information from this unique resource is being published for the first time. Norton challenges existing assumptions about landlord-tenant relations, emigration and land improvement during the famine...

Description
The Registry of Deeds began recording wills of persons who died after March 25, 1708, in which real estate was assigned to heirs. These wills were recorded in three ways: in full, in the testator's own words; "Narrate," or third person; and "Précis," or brief statement showing to whom the testator assigned his real estate. These have become invaluable after the destruction in 1922 of the original wills deposited at the Dublin Public Record Office....
