Thomas Joyner (1619-1694) was born in England and died in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. His descendants settled in Halifax County, North Carolina. Temperance Joyner (1821-1893) was born in North Carolina and married William Raines. Temperance was the daughter of John Joyner (1796-1849) and Zilphia Hinnant (b. 1784). The Hinnants and the Deans, her maternal line, had been in North Carolina since the late seventeen hundreds.
