Buckingham County was divided into at least two tax districts. The lists for each district were either bound in separate books or bound together, often with other years. The commissioner of the revenue was required by law to make copies of the tax lists for the county treasurer, county clerk, and the state auditor (or Department of Taxation). The lists at the Virginia State Library were probably the copies sent to the auditor.

The goal of this surname index is to help individual members find others in the society working on the same family lines and to provide contacts for other genealogists nationwide.
