James Knowles was born in 1811 at sea. His father died the day before he was born. His mother returned with James to Ballymena, Ireland. He emigrated in 1832 and settled in New York City. He married Matilda Darroch in 1839.

Thomas Knowles and his wife, Elizabeth had two children before he died in 1646. One son, Lt. Thomas Knowles died without issue. The other child, Eleazor, married Jane Porter. Their sons were also named Thomas and Eleazor. Descendants remained chiefly in New England.

Robert Kindleside was born in 1714 in Westmoreland. He married Frances Furnass (1717-1799) in about 1739. They had at least five children. Robert died in 1752 in Knock, Westmoreland. Frances had two more children after his death who went by his name. Descendants and relatives lived in Westmoreland, Cumberland, Durham, Kent, London and elsewhere.

Memorial in honor of Levi Knowles (1813-1898). He was born in Hunterdon, New Jersey, moved to Chillicothe and then Cincinnati, Ohio, and in 1833 moved to Philadelphia. Includes a serman given at the funeral by George E. Rees (on p. 15-33).

Description
The Ellis family originally came to America from Wales before the Revolutionary War. Six Ellis brothers are said to have fought in the American Revolution and later settled in southeast New York. One of the brothers was named Benjamin who died in New York in 1810. Descendents later moved to Wisconsin and North Dakota where members of the Ellis family still live.

Richard Knowles was first located on the New England records of Plymouth, Massachusetts in January of 1638. He married Ruth Bower (daughter of George and Barbara Bower) 15 August 1639. They later settled in Eastham, Massachusetts and became the parents of three known children. Richard died ca. 1673 in Massachusetts. Descendants lived in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine and elsewhere.

Description
Richard Knowles of Northampton, England appears to be the oldest known ancestor. His great-grandson, Daniel Knowles, emigrated to the Tidewater region of Virginia in the 1600s. One of Daniel's sons was named Edmund (ca.1700-1762). He moved from Virginia to Maryland and settled in a part that later became part of Delaware. He was the father of six children.
