The author recalled many incidents from the history of the town. Van Lear was created by the Consolidation Coal Company to serve its new mines along Millers Creek in Johnson County, Kentucky. From 1910 to 1940, Van Lear was a prosperous community of 3,000 people. William Cole was born in Warwick County, Virginia, in 1638. He was an attorney and held important government positions in colonial Virginia. He married 1) before 1674, name unknown; 2) Ann Digges (1658-1686), daughter of Governor Edward Digges, in 1681; and 3) Marthat Lear (1668-1704), daughter of Col. John Lear, in 1687. John Hedden (1795-1868) married Elizabeth Bowman (1795-1869). They were both born in New Jersey and both died in New Columbus, Pennsylvania. The first of their six children was born in 1827. Descendants remained in Pennsylvania for a while, but eventually migrated south and west.

John Jepson (1610-1687) appeared in Boston about 1638, possibly with a wife and child. In 1656, he married Emma, widow of John Coddington. They had at least seven children, 1657-1673. Descendants of his grandsons, William Jepson (1702-1745) and Micah Jepson (1716-1798) listed lived in Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, California, Michigan, Arizona, Washington and elsewhere.

Matthias Lehrer (1714-1787) immigrated in 1738 from the Palatinate of Germany to Philadelphia, and in 1744 married Catharine Margaretha Moyer, a fellow passenger. After 1750 they moved to Rockingham County, Virginia, and it was after Matthias died that his widow began to spell the surname as Lair. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Texas and elsewhere.

Joseph Wood was born ca. 1740. Around 1765 he married Martha (Mary) Epperson (Apperson), daughter of Francis Epperson. They had 12 children. The earliest records found for Joseph have him purchasing land in Prince Edward County, Virginia, in 1776.
