From 1910 to 1940, Van Lear was a prosperous community of 3,000 people. William Cole was born in Warwick County, Virginia, in 1638. He was an attorney and held important government positions in colonial Virginia. He married 1) before 1674, name unknown; 2) Ann Digges (1658-1686), daughter of Governor Edward Digges, in 1681; and 3) Marthat Lear (1668-1704), daughter of Col. John Lear, in 1687.
