Ancestors of the author were early settlers of Nicolas County, West Virginia. This work focuses on those families with information on families they married and other prominent families of the area.

Begins with George Washington Lovrien (1821-1854) and his wife, Sophia Bixby (1822-1877). Continues with their descendents to present day. The Louriens were originally from Vermont, but lived in Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and other states.

Morgan Davis (or Davies) was a pioneer in the portion of pre-Revolutionary Rowan Co., North Carolina, that later became Stokes County. His birthplace is unknown, but he was in Rowan Co. as early as 1759. He married Sarah (Reed?) in 1763 and remained in Rowan Co. until he left for Tennessee in 1801. Descendants and relatives lived in Tennessee, Oklahoma, California, Missouri, and elsewhere.

Job Hartt was born 18 June 1792 in Vermont. He married Sarah Wessel (1793-1868) in about 1818 and they had fourteen children. He died 17 June 1875 in Kingston, Michigan. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Michigan.

Daniel Highsmith was in Bertie County, North Carolina in 1744. He married Ann Beck of Norfolk County, Virginia. His son, Thomas, eventually settled in Crawford County, Illinois. One descendant, Sarah Highsmith (1811-1896), married David Young Allison (1808-1881). Several descendants later migrated to Indian Territory and some moved on to Oregon. Descendants lived in Oklahoma, Kansas, Oregon, Missouri, Illinois, and elsewhere.

Wilford E. Hokanson was born in 1909 in Wyoming. He married Afton Barzee in 1933 and they had 9 children and adopted a tenth. They raised their family in Idaho, but retired to southern Utah. They were active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and involved in their community. Biographical information on their family and descendants is included in this volume. J. Frederich Slyh (d. 1800) and his wife, Christiana, were possibly married in 1764 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Between 1782 and 1800 they lived in Berkeley and Jefferson counties, Virginia (now West Virginia). "The early family is primarily found in records located at: Northampton & Lehigh counties, PA; Berkeley & Jefferson counties, WV; Franklin, Madison & Pickaway counties, OH.".

Edward Legg, 1748-1834, married Mary Gover about 1775 in Maryland. They moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia, by 1778, and settled in Knox County, Tennessee ca. 1795. David Coffman, born about 1750 in Pennsylvania, moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee about 1783. Coleman Shelton, 1804-1877, married Mary Sumners in 1826, and lived in Limestone County, Alabama. Descendants lived in Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, and other localities....

Daniel Doughty was born in 1747 in Pennsylvania. He married Martha Lanney 19 December 1766 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They had seven children. Daniel died after 1810. Descendants and relatives lived in Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Washington, California, Texas and elsewhere.
