The earliest known ancestor of the James Lindsey family was George Lindsay (1740-1807) who was born in Frederick County, Virginia and married Margaret "Peggy" Bennett whose family was originally of Maryland. They moved to Anson County, North Carolina where he was a farmer. They were the parents of seven children, one of whom was James Lindsey (b. 1768) who married Ruth Howard and was the ancestor of descendants throughout the United States.

John Calvin Preston was born in Ohio in 1825. He and several of his brothers went to California to participate in the Gold Rush. He married Sarah Jane Lindsey and they had twelve children.
